Welcome to Collier Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center. We are dedicated to the care of the musculoskeletal system, specializing in minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine, shoulder and rotator cuff problems, ACL and meniscus tears, and shoulder, knee and hip replacements. Our mission is to provide the latest and most current treatment to our patients, most of whom can be managed non-surgically. When surgery is indicated, we specialize in the most advanced, cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedures to help our patients get back to their desired level of activity as quickly as possible.

  • James J. Guerra M.D., F.A.C.S.

    Dr. James J. Guerra is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. He specializes in complex shoulder and knee problems. He is an honors graduate of Northwestern University Medical School. Dr. Guerra completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Pennsylvania, and performed an additional year of advanced fellowship training in sports medicine at the prestigious American Sports Medicine Institute, Birmingham, AL with internationally known sports medicine expert, James R. Andrews, MD. Dr. Guerra is a leading innovator in minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery serving as the Medical Director for Arthrex, Inc., the world’s leading sports medicine medical device company. He teaches surgeons from around the world in advanced minimally invasive techniques. He has authored over 30 publications and has lectured at national and international meetings including Germany, Austria, Mexico, Argentina and Japan. This unique experience allows Dr. Guerra to remain at the forefront of his field and bring cutting-edge medical developments to his patients here in Naples. Dr. Guerra has a wealth of sports medicine experience. At the collegiate level, he currently serves as Head Team Physician for Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). In Naples, he is the Team Physician for the Community School of Naples as well as Gulf Coast High School. Previously, Dr. Guerra has served as the Team Physician during Spring Training for the Baltimore Orioles (MLB), and as an assistant Team Physician for the Florida Panthers (NHL). He has been named to the prestigious Castle-Connolly’s America’s Top Doctors from 2008-present. The Castle Connolly directory is one of the most distinguished physician rating services in the country. This annual list is compiled from surveys of physicians asking them who they would go to for treatment in their specialty. In addition, Dr. Guerra has been nationally recognized as one of "America’s Top Orthopedists" every year since 2003 by the Consumer’s Research Council of America. Moreover, Dr. Guerra has been recognized as one of the top 5% in his field by Key Professional’s rigorous rating service and has been included in their annual "Super Doctors" list since 2007. Dr. Guerra serves as a master instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and is a member of several professional societies including, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Sports Medicine Fellowship Society, and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society.

  • Brett A. Wilhoit, M.D.,

    Dr. Brett A. Wilhoit, M.D., is a Sports Medicine and Non-operative orthopaedic physician with Collier Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center. Dr. Wilhoit enjoys treating patients of all ages for both acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. He has a special interest in Regenerative Medicine utilizing the latest technologies to help patients restore or establish normal function. Various therapies are available including ultrasound-guided injections with autologous conditioned plasma (platelet-rich plasma), bone marrow aspirate concentration or amnion injections (stem cell). Dr. Wilhoit was raised in Johnson City, TN., and attended Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. He was a 4-year letterman on the football team while earning a Bachelor of Science and Business Administration with minors in Biology and Chemistry. He is a graduate of East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine and completed his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. He then completed fellowship training at the esteemed American Sports Medicine Institute and Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, AL. He is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and American College of Sports Medicine, and a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine with a Certification of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. Dr. Wilhoit is the team physician for Florida Gulf Coast University, Gulf Coast High School, and First Baptist Academy. He has previously served medically with both collegiate and professional teams including University of Alabama, Troy University, Auburn University, Birmingham Barons baseball, Birmingham Hammers and Charleston Battery soccer clubs. In addition, he has provided event medical coverage for SEC baseball, NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships, as well as numerous endurance events including marathons and triathlon races. Dr. Wilhoit loves spending time with his family and enjoying the outdoors. His passion for sports and competitions has continued beyond the collegiate football years with current interest in competitive endurance events and recreational soccer, golf, and tennis.
